Project Overview
The Lab 4.0 Prototype is a lightweight, scalable Manufacturing Execution System (MES) designed for maker labs, small fabrication studios, and emerging production environments. Built from research conducted during my Master’s thesis on MES and logistics planning, the system powers real‑time production management at lab.nji.io and several partner labs.
Problem Context
Maker labs and small fabrication spaces often struggle with:
- Fragmented production workflows
- No real‑time visibility of machine or station status
- Manual scheduling and logistics
- Difficulty scaling from small batches to larger production
- Lack of MES‑style coordination tools
These challenges limit productivity, reduce reliability, and make it difficult for labs to support professional‑grade production.
Solution
The Lab 4.0 Prototype provides:
- Real‑time machine monitoring
- Station‑level workflow tracking
- Production orchestration for small and large batches
- Scalable architecture suitable for multiple labs
- MES‑inspired planning logic based on academic research
It is used to run production in maker labs where I collaborate, supporting everything from rapid prototyping to batch manufacturing.
Implementation
The system was developed as a practical extension of my thesis work on MES and logistics planning. It integrates:
- Machine status monitoring
- Station workflow management
- Production queues
- Scalable backend architecture
- Interfaces for operators and lab managers
It has been deployed in:
- My personal lab
- Partner maker labs
- Small businesses in supply and model fabrication
Impact
The prototype has delivered measurable improvements:
- Increased production reliability
- Reduced downtime through machine visibility
- More predictable workflows
- Scalable production for small businesses
- Adoption across multiple labs and production environments
It demonstrates how MES principles can be adapted for small‑scale, distributed, and community‑driven production environments.
Scalability & Future Development
The system is designed to grow with the labs that use it:
- Add more machines and stations
- Integrate IoT sensors and robotics
- Expand to multi‑lab coordination
- Support advanced scheduling algorithms
- Connect to cloud‑based MES platforms
